Principles of Christian Counseling CCN 101 (2 units)
A study of basic counseling skills useful for a Pastor or Christian counselor to help others find emotional healing from hurtful past experiences and damaging ways of relating to others. Spiritual, cognitive, and physical areas of healing will also be covered.
Crisis Counseling CCN 202 (2 units)
A Biblical perspective on issues dealing with crisis situations. A basis understanding of how to identify problems as well as basic skills for working with someone in crisis are modeled and taught. Topics include, suicide, domestic violence, child abuse intervention, grief support, transference, counseling referral, etc. (Also titled "Special Issues in Counseling Others")
Marriage and Family Counseling CCN 203 (2 units)
A course giving students practical tools to assist couples struggling with marital difficulties. A Biblical blueprint healthy and intimate marriage is studied. Family issues and practical methods for intervention are included. Pre-marital counseling, divorce/separation recovery, domestic violence, and blended family issues are also covered.
Counseling Youth and Children CCN 204 (2 units)
A study of the Christian point of view on issues dealing with children and adolescents. Counseling techniques are given to deal with depression, suicide, grief, adjustment, abuse (sexual, physical, emotional), and parental neglect. Parenting skills are also covered.
Christian Theology & Philosophy of Healing the Broken CCN 205 (2 units)
This course will present topics relating to spiritual growth and development, the spiritual basis of emotional problems, healing, and counseling applications of forgiveness, reconciliation, conscience, confrontation, grace, mercy, and sorrow. Emphasis will be placed on reconciling and responsibly integrating counseling principles and Biblical truth, allowing one to help one’s self and others to grow toward a faith that is authentic and genuine.
Developmental Processes CCN 206 (2 units)
An investigation of special developmental issues in the counseling process. Developmental phases and counseling that is age-level appropriate is the focus of this course. Young children, youth and teens, early and middle adulthood, the golden years, and death and dying are major topics of study. Psychological and spiritual perspectives will be presented.
Signs and Symptoms of Brokenness CCN 207 (2 units)
Depression, anxiety, psychotic episodes, etc. as signs of injury are discussed in depth. Ability to identify and apply appropriate methods of care and support are studied and applied.
Substance Abuse and Addiction CCN 208 (2 units)
This class will describe the addiction process and how a Christian counselor can offer help to those who are struggling with this issue. Topics will include understanding the biological effects of addition, how people hide their addictions from self and others, confrontation, family co-dependency, pastoral support, treatment programs, and more.
This class will provide hands on experience of the counseling processes used in facilitating groups and individual lay counseling. Effective techniques will be explained, demonstrated, and practiced. (Pre-requisite: Principles of Christian Counseling and two of the Dynamic Discipleship Series CFM 101, 102, 103).
Implementation of a Counseling Ministry CCN 209 (2 units)
The ministry of counseling in the modern church takes many forms. Pastoral counseling, missionary psychology, support group ministries, and small group discipleship, are examples. The focus is on understanding and implementing these ministries in the church. Experienced leaders in these areas will demonstrate and explain strategies, experiences, consequences, and results.
Pre-practicum I: Individual and Couple Counseling Techniques CCN 10 (2 units)
This class provides hands-on experience in the counseling processes involved in working with couples and individuals. Modern Biblical techniques are demonstrated, explained, and practiced.
Basic Counseling Techniques CCN 11 (2 units)
Because it is important for the counselor to set the tone for the counseling interview, the counselor needs to have an understanding of how to make the client feel comfortable talking about their problems. This course will be a hands on course in which the student will learn to use techniques that will help the person being counseled to be at ease, attended to, and provide more information about themselves in the interview. Students will experience sample-counseling sessions to learn each of the techniques.
